Cybersecurity- Things you should Know

by Jane Richardson

Learn about cybersecurity in simple and easy steps—everything you need to know and computer security to protect yourself online.

Cybersecurity is the practice of protecting computer networks and data from unauthorized access, destruction, or modification.

Computer networks are vital to businesses of all sizes, enabling them to communicate with customers, suppliers, partners, and other systems. However, if a network is not secure, it can be easily compromised by cybercriminals. This could lead to the theft of confidential information or the disruption of operations.

There are several aspects of cybersecurity that need to be taken into account for a network to be safeguarded:

  1.  Security architecture
  2.  Network security devices
  3. Cybersecurity policies and procedures
  4.  Data protection

Basics of Computer Security

Computer security is the practice of protecting electronic information from unauthorized access, use, or disclosure. It involves implementing measures to protect computer systems and data from attack,   including installing antivirus software and keeping up to date with security patches.

One of the ways that you can protect your computer from attack is by using a password. A password is a unique string of characters you need to enter to log in to your computer. This way, even if someone else gains access to your computer (through theft or hacking), they won’t be able to use it without first knowing your password.

You should also keep track of your passwords – not just for your safety but also for the protection of other people who have access to them. If you forget your passwords, you may be unable to access important personal or financial information you’re responsible for safeguarding. This can lead to major headaches and frustration – not just for you but also those who rely on you!

Make sure you take advantage of online resources like password managers and secure text editors (like encryption software) to keep track of all your passwords without ever having to remember them all. And lastly, make sure that you regularly back up all the data on your computer in case something happens and you need to restore it.

Types of Cyberattacks

different types of cyberattacks

There are a few different types of cyberattacks, and each one has its own set of consequences.

  1. Computer viruses: These are programs that a hacker can insert into a computer system in order to damage or destroy it. They’re incredibly versatile and can do everything from deleting files to hijacking the browser window.
  2. Phishing attacks: Phishing is when hackers try to trick people into handing over their login information by sending them fake emails that look like they come from trusted sources like their bank or email provider.
  3. Spamming: Spamming is the practice of sending unsolicited email messages with the intention of making money through ad clicks or selling sponsorships on the content of those messages.
  4. Cross-site scripting (XSS) attacks: XSS is a type of attack that allows malicious attackers to inject code into websites’ browsers in order to steal data or hijack accounts tied to that website.

Tips for Staying Safe on the Internet

There are a number of ways to stay safe on the internet, and it all starts with proper cyber security. Here are some tips to help you stay safe:

  1.  Use a password that is hard to crack and unique for each site you visit.
  2.  Don’t share your login information with anyone.
  3.  Keep your computer clean and up-to-date with the latest security patches.
  4.  Don’t click on links in unsolicited emails or messages from people you don’t know.
  5.  Always use a firewall and antivirus software when online.
  6.  Don’t open email attachments from people you don’t know.
